It controls the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles straits making the country a vital economic hub between the Mediterranean and the Black sea. The population is very multi-ethnical, with Russian emigres, Greek settlers, and the Turkish populus at the majority, causing immense instability and alienating the already diminishing rule of the Patriarch whose power is loosely held by the foreign occupation forces.
