Description
Organized in May, June, and July of 1846 at the commencement of war with Mexico, the 1st Regiment of Texas Rifle Volunteers was composed of infantry volunteers drawn from across the state. Commanded by Colonel Albert Sidney Johnston, former Adjutant of the United States 6th Infantry and Adjutant General of Texas, the regiment was mustered into United States service to support early campaign operations along the Rio Grande. Unlike the mounted regiments raised concurrently, this unit served as rifle infantry, bringing disciplined marksmanship and prior military experience to the field. After completing its initial term of service during the opening phase of the conflict, the regiment was honorably discharged in August 1846.
