“To stand in the phalanx is to stand as Syracuse itself.” ₪₪₪₪₪₪₪₪₪₪₪₪₪₪₪₪₪₪ The hoplites were the oldest sons of the city — older than tyrants, older even than wars with Carthage. From the moment Corinthian settlers carved their first homes into the stone of Ortygia, the shield and spear became the measure of citizenship. To own land was to defend it; to defend it was to become a part of the polis. Through centuries of battle, the Hoplītai shaped Syracuse into a power that ruled seas and plains alike. In their ranks stood farmers, merchants, artisans, and aristocrats, all bound by the weight of shield against shield. When they marched, the ground trembled beneath thousands of bronze-clad feet. They formed the walls that moved, the shield-wall that breathed. Against Carthaginian elephants, Sicel hill-tribes, or rival Greek city-states, the phalanx of Syracuse fought with the disciplined determination of men defending not just a city, but a civilization.
