Description
The Order of St. Michael (Ordo Militiae Sancti Michaëlis) was a medieval religious-military order founded in 1172 at Château de Foix in southern France. Established by regional nobles and clerics, it combined disciplined martial training with spiritual devotion. Papal recognition granted the order autonomy, the right to bear arms, and the collection of donations. Headquartered at Château de Foix, its knights trained, administered estates, and maintained communal life, while participating in expeditionary warfare abroad, including the Third and Fourth Crusades and the Sieges of Acre, Zara, and Constantinople. Modeled on a Cistercian-influenced rule, it emphasized obedience, coordination, and strict discipline. Supported by European landholdings and modest banking, the order gradually transitioned from military campaigns to estate management and ceremonial religious duties as large-scale crusading waned.
