Description
In 1810, Westphalia was the Kingdom of Westphalia, a French client state created by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1807 and ruled by his younger brother, Jérôme Bonaparte, from the capital of Cassel (modern Kassel). It was intended to serve as a model of Napoleonic reform, introducing the Napoleonic Code, abolishing serfdom and many feudal privileges, and granting greater legal equality and civil rights, including for Jewish citizens. In 1810, the kingdom expanded after absorbing much of Hanover, although Napoleon later annexed its northern coastal territories directly into the French Empire to strengthen the Continental System against Britain. Despite its progressive legal and administrative reforms, the kingdom was burdened by heavy taxation and military conscription to support Napoleon’s wars, making it increasingly unpopular. The Kingdom of Westphalia lasted only until 1813, when Napoleon’s defeats led to its collapse and the restoration of its territories to other German states.
