Description

The Langsdale family name traces its roots back to the Old Norse word of Langdal or long valley. Whilst it is uncertain who the first Langsdale to arrive on English shores during the Viking Age was, or if they were even called a Langsdale, the first historical records of the name of this particular family come from the 1200s as merchants in London who financially supported the Barons against King John in the First Baron's War and later the de Montfort's in the Second Baron's War against Henry III. Their major financial support would lead to them being elevated to Barons by 1267, seeing the creation of the title Baron Langsdale. Since then the family has continued to acquire titles, lands, wealth, and influence, with them gaining the Marquessate of Langsdale in 1815.
