Description

The I.Leibgarde Battailon, the first battailon of the Garde Regiment (IR 15), served as Frederick the Great’s personal guard and often operated independently of the regiment, with its own grenadier company assigned to the king’s field headquarters for much of the war. During the Seven Years’ War, it contrasted with the regiment’s other battailons, whose flank-grenadier companies were detached to the converged field Grenadier Battailon 15/18, and its best-known combat came at Kolin on 18 June 1757, where accounts describe the unit holding together under heavy Austrian cavalry pressure and forming back-to-back ranks while covering the Prussian withdrawal. In practice, the battailon spent much of the conflict on guard and headquarters duty at Potsdam, and contemporary descriptions emphasize its richly laced ceremonial uniform.
