During the American Civil War, the 4th United States Infantry fought in some of the largest battles of the war. They fought at Bull Run, held the Bridge at Antietam, and they broke the Confederate lines in the Wheatfield. “For two years the U.S. Regulars taught us how to be soldiers. In the Wheatfield at Gettysburg, they taught us how to die like soldiers.” The 1st U.S. Infantry Regiment was established in 1784 as the First American Regiment the first regular army unit organized after the revolution. It served with distinction in the Northwest Indian War. During the War of 1812, it served in Upper Canada, specifically at the Battle of Chippawa, where it stood toe-to-toe with British regulars. The 25th U.S. Infantry Regiment was a regular army regiment raised in Connecticut that took part in numerous campaigns along the Niagara Frontier during the War of 1812.
