Description

The 16e division d'infanterie were an African American infantry regiment who fought alongside the French Army during World War I. The regiment spent 191 days in combat, longer than any other American unit, and became highly decorated by the French for their heroism. They were known for their close collaboration with French forces and their unparalleled courage in battle, earning the respect of both French and enemy troops while garnering several nicknames such as Hommes de Bronze by the French and the more widely known name, Harlem Hellfighters.
