Description
The County of Artois was established in 1237, when King Louis IX granted the lands to his brother, Robert I of Artois. Situated in northern France, Artois became a wealthy and strategically important county, centred around Arras. The House of Artois quickly became one of France's prominent noble families. After the death of Robert II at the Battle of the Golden Spurs in 1302, a bitter succession dispute arose between Mahaut of Artois and her nephew Robert III. Mahaut ultimately secured the county in 1309. As the Hundred Years' War began in 1337, Artois became a key region in the struggle between England and France. Its position near Flanders made it an important military frontier. In 1415, King Henry V of England invaded France. After taking Harfleur, his exhausted army marched through northern France toward Calais. The French army intercepted him near Azincourt, within Artois. On 25 October 1415, the Battle of Agincourt was fought.
