Description
Yoritomo's bushi placed high value on displays of bravery on the field of battle and had scornful contempt these warriors were expected to stand their ground. "Let all of the enemy's arrows strike your front," exhorted an old warrior adage in recognition of the accepted criterion of physical courage. To die with a sense of unblemished honor was preferred to living with the honor-consuming knowledge of having been the shameful victim of fear. Combat was regarded as an "ennobling enterprise," a fortunate chance to display boldness resourcefulness, and gallantry (benevolence).
