By the 1880s, a distinct Australian identity developed and nationalist movements moved to establish a federation of the states, including New Zealand. Independent from Britain, through peaceful means, the Federation of Australia and New Zealand is an interventionist state, seeking to grow a powerful sphere in Oceania and Asia.
