Governed as a centralized monarchy, the kingdom maintained authority over a vast network of principalities and city-states along the Mekong, asserting both political and religious influence throughout the region. In this era, succession disputes were frequent, with royal princes and regional governors often contending for the throne. Buddhism, closely tied to the monarchy, served as a unifying force, while Lan Xang’s strategic location facilitated both commerce and occasional conflict with neighboring Ayutthaya and Đại Việt.
