Description
Following the War of Spanish Succession, many privately contracted crews in the West Indies and abroad suddenly found themselves unemployed; the plight of all soldiers. Many of these crews, rather than returning to civilian life, took up piracy and struck out to not only make their own fortune but to make a free man's paradise on the island of New Providence and surrounding areas in the Bahamas. This "paradise" of absolute liberty and poverty was dubbed the Republic of Pirates.
