𝐒𝐔𝐌𝐌𝐀𝐑𝐘 "The Fatherland's Shield" "The Fatherland’s Shield calls us to new Events" German line infantry from the Bohemian territory. Following Archduke Charles' reforms after 1806, the German line infantryman became well trained and far more disciplined than the Frenchman, and the "German" regiments were the best trained and disciplined part of the Austrian infantry. Armed with muskets, bayonets, modern uniforms, and an iron sense of discipline, the regiment could take volley upon volley while remaining at attention. At the battle of As pern-Essling, the regiment attacked the burning village of As pern, and drove the French out, which led to Archduke Charles giving the regiment personal recognition and its nickname.
