Description
In 1471, Rennyō, a famed religious monk settled in Kaga. Rennyō constructed a religious church that was always filled with individuals of low status who supported Rennyō’s teachings of the Jodo Shinshu. The Ikkō-Ikki mass was filled with commoners, ronin, and sōhei. When the province of Kaga was thrown into the Ōnin war, the provincial lord, Togashia Masachika, enlisted the Ikkō followers into aiding him during the war. This was the rise of the Ikkō-Ikki. By the time the war had long ended, the Ikkō-Ikki rose up and expelled the samurai lord from his position of power in Kaga.
