Description
The Cult of Janus | Office of the King The Roman figure Janus was the unique two-faced spirit of beginnings, transitions, doorways, and endings. As the spirit of all beginnings, he was honored first in most public and private ceremonies. The first day of every month and the month of January were special to him. The Rex Sacrorum ("King of the Sacred Rites") was the most senior ceremonial leader, established to carry out the ancient, non-governing sacred duties of the former rulers. The Rex Sacrorum was the leader chiefly responsible for the rites of Janus, including monthly ceremonies. This role served as the main officiant for the spirit who guided all passages and new beginnings, and as the decayed King of Rome
