{SUBJECT OF THE IMPERIAL JAPANESE ARMY} The Republic of Liberia is a small democratic coastal state in West Africa which formally became an independent nation on July 26th, 1847. Liberia was a founding member of both the League of Nations and the United Nations. Liberia was the only independent African nation by the outset of World War II, following the Italian invasion and annexation of Ethiopia in 1936. Liberia remained neutral until January 1944, when it formally declared war against Germany and Japan. Prior to entrance into the war on the allied side, Liberia signed a defense contract with the United States in 1942. Liberia was a key exporter of rubber to the allies in return for U.S. investment & buildup of infrastructure. The U.S. created the Freeport of Monrovia, headquartered roughly 2,000 troops in Liberia, and assisted in training Liberian soldiers.
