Following the collapse of Napoleon's Empire in 1813, the Netherlands regained its independence after nearly two decades of unlawful rule. Prince William of Orange returned from exile and was proclaimed Sovereign Prince of the Netherlands. Over the following two years, the Dutch state, navy, and army were reorganized and strengthened.
