Description
One of the famous regiments of the Swedish Army during the Thirty Years War was the Blue Regiment of Foot, which was called Old-Blue (Alt-Blau) from 1634. It was raised in 1624 by Hans Georg of Arnim-Boitzenburg. It initially recruited in Livonia, and when Gustavus Adolphus landed in Pomerania in 1630, the regiment was reinforced with men from there [Pomerania]. Since 1630, the regiment would participate in almost every battle of the Swedish Intervention. At the Battle of Lutzen in 1632, the regiment was decimated, loosing at least 73% of its strength. In 1633 the regiment was brought back up to strength likely with new recruits likely from the Upper Rhine area and Switzerland. In 1630 the regiment would pass to Hans Georg aus dem Winckel who in 1635 would take a company of the Old Blue Regiment and convert it to a Troop of Dragoons under his command.
