It involved placing groups of artillery batteries into infantry regiments, thus forming regimental artillery. As punishment for incompetence, gunners were to be placed into infantry regiments. During the War of the Austrian Succession, the regimental artillery defended the empire's borders from invasion. Succeeding the endeavors imposed by the Prince of Liechtenstein to improve the effectiveness of the artillery, it later gained a reputation as one of the best, if not the best, in all of Europe.
