It faced Napoleons invasion of Russia with no fear and ultimately destroyed the Grande Armée with the help of the cold and bitter winter and fiery peasants. After Russia and its allies defeated Napoleon, it became known as the "Saviour of Europe". The Russian Empire was the third-largest empire in history, at one point stretching over three continents it was surpassed in size only by the British and Mongolians.
