Description
The Papal Corsican Guard was raised in 1603 by Clemente VIII but can be traced back to 1468 where 4 companies of heavy cavalry consisting of Corsican knights joined Papal Service. Under Alexander VI, the unit would be reinforced in 1528 when 600 Corsican mercenaries who were in French service in Naples, joined service of the Pope. Among the incorporated troops were Compagnie di Ven tu ra led by Sampiero and Raffaello Corso. For context the Compagnie di Ven tu ra were mercenary units raised by Italian noblemen that were comprised of soldiers of fortune, mainly consisting of Central and Northern Italians, at least for a while. In 1603, Clemente VIII enlisted 600 more Corsicans which were quartered in the Regola and the Ponte district. In 1637, 400 more Corsicans were recruited due to rising crime in the city. The guard would be disbanded in 1662 at the request of King Louis XIV due to issues.
