The United Nations is a coalition of international governments, and was founded as a replacement to the former League of Nations after World War II. It's current responsibilities include maintaining international peace and security, promoting human rights, fostering social and economic development, protecting the environment, and providing humanitarian aid in cases of famine, natural disaster, and armed conflict. They take a major role in advising NATO command and member countries.
