Description
Los Angeles County was established in Southern California and is one of the original counties formed by the State of California on 18 February 1850. The area now comprising Los Angeles County has been inhabited for thousands of years, with numerous Indigenous communities establishing settlements throughout the coastal plains, valleys, foothills, and surrounding islands. Spanish settlement of the region began during the late eighteenth century, followed by Mexican and later American administration. Los Angeles County was formally organized as a political subdivision of the State of California in 1850, following California's admission to the United States. The county encompasses a wide variety of natural and developed areas, including coastal plains, mountain ranges, valleys, rivers, islands, and extensive urban and suburban communities stretching from the Pacific Ocean into the interior of Southern California.
