Description
The Astor family was one of the most respected old-money families of New York City’s prestigious Fifth Avenue society. Headed by Mr. William Backhouse Astor Jr. and Mrs. Caroline Schermerhorn Astor, the family was known for its wealth, refinement, and distinguished social standing. Mr. Astor was born and raised in New York City and spent his entire life among Fifth Avenue’s elite. Descended from an established old-money family with Dutch roots, he inherited the Astor fortune but preferred escaping to his yachts and cruise ships, leaving his wife to manage the household. Mrs. Astor came from an aristocratic heritage and was admired for her elegance, charitable works, and cultured demeanor. Left alone by her husband, she independently raised their five children—Emily, Helen, Charlotte, Caroline "Carrie", and John Jacob "Jack" IV—shaping them into prominent figures known for their grace and refinement.
