Description

The Supreme Court of the United States does not have a formal rank or hierarchy among its members. The Justices of the Supreme Court are all considered equals in terms of their authority and decision-making power. However, the Chief Justice holds a unique leadership role within the Court, serving as the presiding member and responsible for certain administrative functions, such as assigning who writes the majority opinion in a case when they are in the majority. Other than the Chief Justice, the Associate Justices are not ranked in a formal hierarchy within the Court. They each have one vote in deciding cases, and their votes are of equal importance. The order in which they were appointed determines the general order in which they participate in discussions and deliberations, but this does not imply any formal rank or authority. The Supreme Court operates as a collective body where decisions are reached by majority vote, and the opinions of individual Justices are influential
