During the Shimabara uprising, Dutch merchants and settlers conspired with the Hirado clan to unite the Kyūshū Islands against the Tokugawa Shogunate. In this daring move, the militarily advanced Dutch settlers took the opportunity to kick out the shogunate and form the Kyūshū Republic. Daimyo were given prominent positions in the newly formed republic.
