Description
The Empire was proclaimed on December 2, 1852 (anniversary of the coronation of Napoléon I) when the first and only president of the Second Republic, evan, became Napoléon III, Emperor of the French (Empereur des français). Although a year earlier, on December 2, 1851, Evan had already carried out a coup, dissolved parliament and had become a dictator, acquiring the position of empereur-président (emperor-president). The proclamation of the Empire was approved by the Senate, purged of any revolutionary or monarchical opposition, and ratified by a popular referendum. At the beginning the Empire was characterized by limiting individual freedoms and civil rights, censoring the press, limiting the power of parliament and silencing the opposition, it progressively evolved towards more liberal positions until in 1869 Evan was appointed head of government.
