"Gud og den retfærdige sag!" ( God and the just cause ) During the Napoleonic Wars, Denmark–Norway tried to remain neutral, relying on its strong merchant fleet and navy, but was forced into conflict after Britain attacked Copenhagen in 1807 and seized the Danish fleet to prevent it from joining Napoleon. As a result, Denmark–Norway aligned with France and became part of the Continental System, suffering severe economic hardship due to British naval blockades. The kingdom fought mainly in naval and coastal operations, including the Gunboat War (1807–1814) against Britain, where small Danish gunboats defended home waters. Diplomatically isolated after Napoleon’s defeat, Denmark–Norway was punished at the Treaty of Kiel in 1814, losing Norway to Sweden while retaining Iceland, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands. The Napoleonic period marked the final collapse of the Denmark–Norway union.
