Description
In 1808, while Spain was distracted by the Napoleonic Wars, a rebellion began in the Philippines as farmers, militias, and defecting Spanish officers united against colonial rule under the leadership of Samuel Castillo, who formed the Hukbong Cebuano. By 1809, they had swiftly taken Cebu, and with support from Great Britain, the once objective to free Cebu grew into a full war for independence, ending in 1814 with the unification of the entire archipelago under one banner. Though Cebu was first established as a republic, a desire for tradition and stability led Samuel Castillo in 1815 to pass the Saligang Batas of 1815, transforming the state into a monarchy ruled by a king and a queen.
