The Ghibellines were those who in the struggle between the Papacy and the Empire, supported the cause and supremacy of the Emperor, they were those who did not want the Church to interfere in the politics of Florence and were initially supported by the imperial forces in the fight against the opposite faction , that of the Guelphs. But after losing the support of the Emperor of the Swabian dynasty, they also lost their power, were forced to surrender their arms and were sent into exile.
