Description

𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐬 – 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐲 “The Houston Battery” The Houston Artillery Company was organized in 1840 as a civic militia company to assist in the defense of Houston and the approaches along Buffalo Bayou. Drawn from local citizens, the battery trained to operate light field pieces in support of the town and to reinforce militia or regular troops during periods of alarm. Equipped with light cannon suitable for short movements between defensive positions, the Houston Battery was prepared to serve at crossings, roads, and public works where artillery skill was required. Its volunteers, merchants, craftsmen, and veterans, formed a trained gun crew ready to assemble when danger threatened the settlement. As a town battery rather than a standing field unit, the Light Artillery reflected the willingness of the Republic’s citizens to defend their community with the limited but valuable artillery Regiment Cap: 10
