Description
The Customs Board is a central government agency under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Finance that administers and supervises the collection of customs and excise duties, as well as car tax. The Customs Board was established on 18 February 1812, whose duties included the collection and settlement of customs duties, supervision of customs chambers , prevention of smuggling, calculation of the country's trade balance , and collection of information on shipwrecks. After the Finnish declaration of independence, the Customs Board's field of responsibility expanded: it was responsible for the collection of excise duties from 1919 to 1936 and again from 1970 onwards, as well as the import turnover tax from 1941 and from 1958 for the car and motorcycle tax.
