Description
The Kingdom of Italy was the name assumed on March 17, 1861 by the state that emerged after the Italian national unification (1848-1870) led by Victor Emmanuel II who was crowned King of Italy in 1861. The creation of the Kingdom of Italy was the The result of the concerted efforts of Italian nationalists and monarchists loyal to the House of Savoy, hitherto reigning in the predecessor state to the Kingdom of Italy, the Kingdom of Sardinia, to establish a united kingdom that would encompass the entire Italian peninsula.
