It originated from the title Count palatine of the Lateran Palace, which The Holy Roman Emperor, Charles IV bestowed upon a nobleman. The honor of joining this chivalric order was awarded for special services and remarkable actions that benefitted the Holy Roman Empire and Its Emperor.
