Description
In the Viva Empire, the Zouaves were brought to the public's attention by Elmer who established and ran a drilling company called the “Zouave Cadets”. The drilling company went on a nationwide tour. Zouave units were subsequently raised on both sides of the Civil War of 1861-1865; comprising a regiment under the command of Law Andrew the 11th New York Infantry - the "Fire Zouaves" of New York. The distinctive uniforms of the French and other Zouaves units were of North African origin. It usually consisted of short open jackets, loose pants ########## belts and a fez-like fez headdress.
