One of the largest empires, it has been the first state to usher the European Era of Discovery and achieve a global scale, now controlling vast portions of the Americas, the archipelago of the Philippines, various islands in the Pacific and territories in Western Europe and Africa. It has been one of the world's most powerful empires of the Renaissance, becoming known as "the empire on which the sun never sets", and is currently at its maximum extent in the 17th century.
