Description
Welcome to the League of Spartan Mercenaries. --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- Spartan mercenaries were less common than other Greeks, but highly valued for their professional military training and the prestige of their city. Driven by political exile or the need for state revenue after Sparta's decline (post-371 BC), citizens occasionally served abroad. Spartans were especially sought after as commanders for foreign armies, leveraging their legendary reputation. A key example is the Spartan general Clearchus, who commanded the Ten Thousand Greek mercenaries for the Persian Prince Cyrus the Younger in 401 BC. Later, King Agesilaus II even led mercenary campaigns in Egypt to earn money for a weakened Sparta. --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---
