Die Freie und Hansestadt Lübeck #134215547
Description
“Concordia domi, foris pax” In 1360 King Valdemar IV of Denmark had seized the southern Baltic coast by annexing Skåne and Öland securing the Sound's tolls and fisheries. In 1361 he conquered the island of Gotland and the Hanseatic port of Visby. These moves threatened Lübeck’s trading network and provoked the League to war. In 1362 Lübeck’s mayor Johann Wittenborg led a Hanseatic fleet to relieve the siege of Helsingborg but was repulsed by Valdemar’s navy. The defeat sparked outrage in Lübeck and the city blamed Wittenborg for the loss leading to his execution. After this setback Lübeck spearheaded Hanseatic diplomacy to check Danish gains. A truce at Vordingborg in 1365 left Lübeck stripped of toll revenues and trading privileges, breeding bitter resentment. In 1367 a Hansetag met in Cologne where Lübeck and other “Wendish” cities formally created the Confederation of Cologne against Denmark sparking the second phase of the Danish-Hanseatic War.
