Description

The Svenska Livgardet was born in 1521 when 16 men from Dalarna were chosen to protect Gustav Vasa, the future King of Sweden. As Sweden became a powerful empire, this unit transformed into an elite force of veteran soldiers, the Caroleans, who were the King’s personal shield on every battlefield. They were famous for their aggressive Gå På tactic, charging directly into enemy fire with long pikes and swords. These guards followed legendary kings like Gustavus Adolphus and Charles XII through Germany and Russia, representing the heart and pride of the Swedish military machine. However, the imperial glory of the regiment reached its turning point at the Battle of Poltava in 1709, where many were lost. The era of the imperial Livgardet officially came to an end in 1721 with the Treaty of Nystad; as the Swedish Empire collapsed and lost its territories, the regiment ceased its role as a conquering force to become a symbolic defensive guard for the royal palace.
