Description

The Teutonic Order was a Catholic military and religious order founded in the late 12th century, initially to care for pilgrims in the Holy Land. After losing influence in the East, it established a powerful, theocratic state in the Baltic region, known as the State of the Teutonic Order, in the 13th century, which was characterized by its brutal subjugation of the region and promotion of German colonization. The order declined after significant military defeats, including the Battle of Grunwald in 1410. Napoleon abolished the order in the early 19th century, but it was re-established by the Pope in 1929 as a charitable and healing institution, with a headquarters in Vienna.
