De acordo com a plataforma TerraBrasilis, do Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (Inpe), o Brasil teve 1 milhão de focos de queimadas entre 2020 e 2024. O pior ano foi 2024, que, segundo o Ministério do Meio Ambiente e da Mudança do Clima (MMA), teve aumento por causa de uma seca muito forte, a pior dos últimos 74 anos (Agência Brasil, 2025). A fumaça das queimadas libera poluição no ar que, segundo o Ministério da Saúde e a Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS), pode causar doenças respiratórias, problemas no coração e piorar a saúde de pessoas com doenças pré-existentes. Conforme a OMS, crianças, idosos e portadores de doenças crônicas são os mais vulneráveis. O Ministério da Saúde alerta que esses períodos aumentam a procura por hospitais, sobrecarregando o sistema.
