Description
The Regiment of the French Guards was raised in 1560 or 1563 by the Queen-Mother Catherine de Medic, recruiting at Rouen in Normandy. At the time it was under the name of Enseignes de la Garde du Roi and was disbanded in 1573. It was then reestablished in 1574 with different reductions and assignments during its history but by 1630, the regiment numbered 30 companies. Throughout most of its history, the unit consisted of mainly Frenchmen with there being some Scots, Swiss, and English being present in the late 1500s.
