Fiji Defence Force/Fiji Military Forces Era: 1940s Founded: ######## Information: The FDF was first formed in 1920 with 1 infantry battalion. In 1936 New Zealand was given the responsibility for the defence of Fiji. By the time WW2 broke out the FDF had many new units and the FDF changed its title to the Fiji Military Forces. The Americans selected Fiji as a training base due to its central location, and due to so many Americans arriving it was decided to relieve the NZDF and place the US under control. Although most of the New Zealand officers still commanded. The first Fijian troops were deployed in December 1942. Multiple battalions and commando units saw action in the Solomon Islands where they gained a reputation for bravery. After extensive use in the Solomons the Fiji military force was demobilised in 1945.
