Patriotism is something we can all understand—even if we experience it differently. As citizens of the United States of America, we all participate in displays of patriotism: voting, freedom of speech, observance of national holidays, reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, etc. These things are all part of being an American citizen. And while we all engage in acts of patriotism, it’s important to understand how this contributes to our national identity. Why is patriotism important? Why is it so important that we all engage in it? These are questions we don’t really stop to ask ourselves—yet, the answer is worth exploring. Here’s a look at what it means to be patriotic and why displays of patriotism are such an important part of our national identity as a free country.
