Description
79TH REGIMENT OF FOOT The 79th Regiment of Foot, known as the Cameron Highlanders, was formed in 1793 as the 79th Regiment of Foot (Camerxnian Volunteers) from the members of the Clan Cameron at Fort William in the Scottish Highlands. In its early years, the regiment participated in an unsuccessful campaign under the Duke of Yxrk during the French Revolutionary Wars, and was listed for disbandment upon returning to England. The disbandment was halted, and the 79th was sent to the West Indies. Alongside her several adjacent Scottish regiments, the 79th participated in the Egypt campaign, which saw the effective defence of British interests in India, earning them the battle honour 'EGYPT' on their colours and regimental badges. The 79th boasts being specifically mentioned by the Duke of Wxllxngton in his dispatches from the Battle of Wxterloo--an honour afforded to only three other regiments present.
