Description
A thousand-year-old entity, the Holy Roman Empire, had become highly decentralized over the centuries, with Saxony being a part of it until 1806, when the Napoleonic Wars started. For several centuries, the rulers of the Electorate of Saxony have held the title of elector. In 1806 after Napoleon defeated Emperor Francis II at the Battle of Austerlitz, the electorate was elevated to the status of an independent kingdom with the support of the First French Empire, then the dominant power in Central Europe.
