OtherENHistoryWar of 1812Kentucky
Description
In 1812, Kentucky was a young frontier state, only twenty years admitted to the Union, yet it played an outsized role in the war. With a population hardened by frontier life and constant conflict with Native nations, Kentucky became one of the most important sources of manpower for the American war effort. Kentucky sent more than 25,000 volunteers into the field—far more than any other western state—and suffered more battle deaths than all other states combined. Its men fought in nearly every major campaign in the Northwest, including the River Raisin, Fort Meigs, and Thames. Kentucky’s governor, Isaac Shelby, was a Revolutionary War hero and one of the most influential wartime leaders in the West. His call for volunteers in 1813 produced thousands of mounted riflemen in a matter of days, forming the core of the force that defeated Tecumseh at the Thames.
