The basilischi are the the mafia of Basilicata formed in 1994 in potenza. They were inspired by the Italian drama film “I basilischi” before the 1999 Law enforcement of Basilicata ordered 84 pre trials known as the maxi trials which concluded in 2007 where 26 people were imprisoned for a total of 242 years for Mafia association. The conviction of many high profile members of the clan forever fractured the clan which still lives on as drag lords and thieves who are well known for the protection of shops in the region. The Calabrian Ndrangheta mafia largely influences and keeps alive the clan as the 5th mafia of Italy. The film “I basilischi” is based in Matera the second most populated city in Basilicata and was directed by Lina wer-t-mü-ll-er in 1963. After the 1980 earthquakes that devastated Basilicata many funds entered the region which lead to the rise of crime organisations and clans and eventually in 1994 the forming of the basilischi by Giovanni Luigi Cosentino.
